Renal Biopsy

A tissue from the kidney will be taken out and examined under microscope to diagnose certain kidney diseases. These tests will help to identify the exact kidney disease and treatment options.

How is Renal Biopsy carried out:

Percutaneous biopsy: It’s a simple day care procedure done under local ananethesia with a Special biopsy gun. It is usually done under the guidance of ultrasound to mark the kidney and 2 samples are taken and sent for examination.

Recovery from Renal Biopsy:

Once a renal biopsy is done, the patient will be shifted to the observatory room and vital signs will be monitored constantly. The blood pressure, the pulse rate, and breathing pattern will be recorded. The urine passed will be looked for any bleeiding. If patient remains with stable vitals and clear urine , he is discharged from ward. The patient mustn’t carry out any rigorous physical activity such as running, gymming, swimming, contact sports and so on for few days but can carryout daily normal activities.

Surgical or open Biopsy: In some rare cases, percutaneous biopsy cannot be done when surgical cut is made near the kidney skin and the surgeon take out the tissue from the required area. It is also popularly known as Open Biopsy.
