Renal Transplant

Renal transplant is offered to patients with advanced stage 5 CKD. It is the best mode of treatment available presently for advanced kidney disease. He/she needs to be on dialysis either hemodilayis or peritoneal dialysis till he gets kidney transplant done. A donor is required for a kidney transplantation. The patient can survive with a single kidney which is transplanted, and he will be off any form of dialysis. The recipient will be on life long medications called immunosuppressant medications and regular followup with nephrologist .

Sources of Kidneys:

Living Donors:

The potential donors must be fit for kidney donation which includes medical and psychological tests to finalize the donor. The donor can survive normally with one kidney and needs no medications but will need regular followup with nephrologist atleast once a year.

As per Indian Human Transplant laws — Only related transplants are allowed in India and should fulfil the criteria of no financial transaction between donor and recipient.

Related transplant: donors include parents, grand parents, siblings, children, spouse. Un related but legal: first degree cousins and nephews.

Deceased (cadaveric) Donors:

Here donors are patients who are “Brain dead” – considered dead, though their heart continues to function. His organs are preserved using special preserving solution and the kidney is transported to specified hospital where the allotted patient will recive the deceased kidney. purpose.
